Task Force 67

Daniel J. Callaghan was born in San Francisco July 26, 1890 and died at age 52 on November 13, 1942 during a nighttime engagement in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. Commanding Task Force 67 of two heavy cruisers, three light cruisers and eight destroyers, Rear Admiral Callaghan led the attack from the bridge of the USS San Francisco in pitch blackness against two Japanese battleships, one light cruiser and eleven destroyers. The Japanese battleships devastated the American Task Force, with much loss of life--including Admiral Callaghan, but the damage they inflicted saved the day for the landing U.S. forces and turned the tide in the war against the Japanese Empire.
