Living in Exile
As noted in the Bay Citizen, San Francisco is the nation's most expensive city for renters. As one of its refugees now living in exile near the Canadian border, I can attest as to how difficult it was to survive in the Bay Area on low income, let alone Social Security disability.
Ironically, the year after I moved there, I was instrumental in protecting rent control in the 2000 elections. Now, I'd just like to be able to find a studio apartment there so I could return.
Unfortunately, with studios starting at $1,000/month and my SSI locked in at $900/month, that doesn't look like anything that will happen any time soon.
