Indigenous Cuisine

Wahpepah's Kitchen in Oakland serves Indigenous food. On opening day, 1,200 customers showed up to drum and dance in celebration of Native American cuisine. In the mid 1800s, the U.S. Army slaughtered the American bison to near extinction in order to subjugate the Plains Indians. In 1956, tens of thousands of Native Americans were forcibly relocated from reservations to urban areas, severing ties to their foodways. The vision of Wahpepah's Kitchen is to heal Native American people by reconnecting them with their Native foods.
