Sacred Ground
The four-part Standing on Sacred Ground film series is one of those epic achievements that only come along once in a lifetime. As filmmaker Toby McLeod remarked on the shoots that took the film crew from Russia to Papua, Canada, California, Australia, Hawaii, Ethiopia and Peru, "The toughest shoot by far was the tar sands. Plumes of toxic carbon clouds going up, oily waste ponds seeping poisons down into the Athabasca River, moose and eagle and bear grieving for their shrinking, shattered boreal forest. I'd never been to a petro-state before, and the deformed fish and heart-breaking cancer cases in the native community of Fort Chipewyan took a toll on every member of our crew."
